Today marks the conclusion of the first full five-day week of the school year at LHS! With each passing day, it is starting to feel like school is back in full swing at LHS.
This week, clubs began holding interest meetings and giving students opportunities to get involved and explore new interests. Auditions were held for several of our musical ensembles, our athletic teams are getting into midseason form, and underclassmen took their school pictures on Thursday and Friday. It has been great to see our students settling into their routines and getting involved in all that LHS has to offer.
September is Attendance Awareness Month, a nationwide effort highlighting the important connection between daily school attendance, academic achievement, and long-term student success. Regular attendance helps students stay connected to their classes, teachers, friends, and the many opportunities available throughout the school day.
Missing just two days of school per month, whether excused or unexcused, can add up to approximately 10% of the school year and may result in a student being considered chronically absent. Families can help by establishing consistent morning and bedtime routines, preparing clothes and school materials the night before, scheduling medical appointments outside of school hours whenever possible, and avoiding extended vacations while school is in session.
Of course, we understand that students get sick and there are times when an absence is necessary. Our goal is simply to work together as a school community to make regular attendance a priority and ensure that our students are in school, on time, and ready to learn whenever possible.
Finally, as a reminder, all district schools will be closed on Monday in observance of Yom Kippur. School will reopen on Tuesday, and it will be an A Day.

The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee is looking for new sophomore and junior members for the upcoming school year.
As a member, you’ll have the opportunity to work directly with the Mayor, local committees and commissions, share your perspective on issues affecting Leonia’s youth, and help develop initiatives that make a meaningful impact in our community.
No previous leadership or government experience is required. We’re looking for students who are interested in their community and ready to get involved.

Age-Friendly Leonia connects high school students with older residents in our community who could use a helping hand. Volunteer opportunities will include fall leaf cleanup, snow shoveling, community events, and much more!
It’s a great way to earn volunteer hours right here in Leonia, meet other students, give back to your community, and make a real difference. You’ll also need to attend a short orientation once you sign up so you know exactly what to expect.

LHS Physics students in Mr. Braden’s classes completed their first labs of the year this week, using buggy cars to explore constant velocity motion. Students measured the cars’ time and position as they traveled along a measured track, then used graphs and linear equations to model their motion.
The hands-on lab was a great way to kick off a year of learning. Students had fun while beginning to explore important physics concepts, including reference frames and the differences between vector and scalar quantities. It was a great start to putting physics into action!

On Wednesday, representatives from the Marine NROTC program visited LHS to speak with students and share information about the opportunities available through the program. Students who were interested had the chance to ask questions, learn more about NROTC, and pick up additional information.
The representatives also brought along a pull-up bar, giving students an opportunity to test their strength and demonstrate their physical abilities. It was a fun and engaging way for students to learn more about the program!

We are proud to celebrate senior cellist Kayla Park, freshman violist Madison Um, and junior cellist Aiden Yedidia on their acceptance into the New York Youth Symphony Chamber Music Program, as well as sophomore violist Kaylin Park on her acceptance into the New York Youth Symphony!
The Chamber Music Program brings together talented young musicians for a season of performance and collaboration, while the New York Youth Symphony gives outstanding young musicians the opportunity to perform major orchestral repertoire at prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall.
Congratulations to Kayla, Madison, Aiden, and Kaylin on this outstanding achievement.

Consistent attendance and punctuality are two of the most important factors in a student’s success at LHS. At Leonia High School, absences and tardies are tracked closely, and students risk losing credit for courses if they exceed the allowed number of absences. Being on time to school and to every class is just as important, as it minimizes disruptions and helps students stay fully engaged in their learning. Regular attendance builds strong academic habits, keeps students connected to their teachers and peers, and ensures they don’t fall behind. We encourage families to schedule all appointments after school hours whenever possible to limit time away from class. Please take a few minutes to review the full attendance policy and guidelines in the Student Handbook so that expectations are clear for both students and parents. |
A reminder for families: All students are required to use their district-issued iPads while in school. Students should bring their iPad to school every day, fully charged and ready for use. Personal tablets, iPads, laptops, or MacBooks may not be used during the school day.
If a student forgets their district-issued iPad at home, a loaner device will not be issued. Loaner iPads are reserved only for students whose district-issued iPad is being repaired by the school.
Additionally, to help maintain a focused learning environment:
- Cell phones, AirPods, earbuds, and headphones are not permitted at any time.
- Meta glasses and other smart glasses are not permitted at any time.

We are less than 24 hours away from the Big North V NJIC: Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase, taking place tomorrow, September 19th, and it is shaping up to be a fantastic day for soccer and an even more meaningful day for our community.
Coaches and soccer teams from across Northern New Jersey will come together for this special event, featuring 20 teams united to raise awareness and support cancer research.

College-bound student-athletes and their families are invited to attend The NIL Playbook: Money, Branding & Beyond, a free educational event sponsored by Visions Federal Credit Union.
With recent changes surrounding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities in college athletics, student-athletes and their families may find themselves making important financial and personal decisions earlier than ever. This event is designed to help families better understand the NIL landscape and prepare students who are interested in continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level.
The program will feature industry professionals who will share valuable information and practical guidance on financial wellness, personal branding, and legal considerations related to NIL opportunities.
