Message from the Principal

This week brought some wonderful news for our school community. We proudly recognized our Class of 2026 Valedictorian, Joonwoo Lee, and Salutatorian, Arah Cho, two students whose hard work and commitment to excellence truly stand out. We also celebrated Miguel Cardenas, who was named Leonia High School’s recipient of the 2026 Bergen County Unsung Hero Award. Being honored among students from high schools across Bergen County is a special distinction, and we are incredibly proud of this achievement.

Next week will be a busy one at LHS. We will meet with students in grades 9 through 11 to review the course request process for the 2026–2027 school year. Several field trips are also on the calendar, giving students valuable learning experiences beyond the classroom.

We will close out the week with the annual Senior Class Card Party. It is always a great evening filled with fun and prizes, and all are encouraged to attend in support of the senior class. We hope to see you there.

GO LIONS!

Leonia High School Celebrates Our 2026 Unsung Hero

Leonia High School is proud to recognize Miguel Cardenas as our recipient of the 2026 Bergen County School Boards Association Unsung Hero Award.

Presented in partnership with the New Jersey School Boards Association, this annual honor celebrates one graduating senior from each Bergen County high school whose quiet contributions have made a meaningful difference in their school and community. These students may not always seek the spotlight, but they lead through resilience, character, and a steady commitment to others.

Miguel embodies the spirit of this award. Through perseverance, integrity, and a willingness to support those around him, Miguel has left a lasting mark on the Leonia High School community.

Miguel was honored alongside 56 other seniors representing every high school in Bergen County at the 4th Annual Bergen County Unsung Hero Awards Ceremony, held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the James Williams Performing Arts Center at Henry P. Becton Regional High School in East Rutherford.

Congratulations to Miguel on this well deserved recognition. Leonia High School is proud to celebrate this outstanding member of the Class of 2026.

Important Reminder Regarding Electronic Devices: Smart Glasses

To support a school environment where students can fully engage with their teachers and classmates, I would like to remind you of the district's policy regarding electronic communication devices. Please be advised that Meta Glasses and all other Smart Glasses are not permitted to be worn or used in the school building.

Under District Policy 5516, these items are classified as electronic communication devices because of their capability to record audio or video and transmit information. To protect the privacy rights of our students and staff and to prevent disruptions to the educational program, students cannot have these devices on while in school.

Should a student be found with Meta Glasses or other Smart Glasses, the device will be confiscated by a staff member and turned in to the Vice Principal, Mr. Anthony Servis. We thank you for your continued cooperation in ensuring our school remains a focused and respectful learning environment.

Students and parents are encouraged to review Policy 5516 for more detailed information regarding the use of electronic communication devices. This policy is available for review in the Student Handbook on the LHS website or on the Leonia Schools Website under District Policies.

Chart Your Course: The 2026–2027 Program of Studies Is Live

The 2026–2027 Program of Studies is now live on the LHS website and can be found under the Student Life tab. With its release, we have officially begun planning for the upcoming school year.

Teachers are currently working on course recommendations for next year. Beginning in early March, Mr. Kalender and members of the school counseling team will meet with students during grade-level meetings to review options and support the course selection process.

As part of this planning cycle, Leonia High School will host our annual 8th Grade Scheduling Night on February 19, 2026 at 6:00 PM in the Little Theater. This event is an important opportunity for students and families to learn more about our academic offerings and the transition to high school.

Students will be able to enter their course requests in the Genesis Student Portal beginning on March 13 at 9:00 AM. The course request window will close on March 23 at 12:00 PM, so we encourage students to review the Program of Studies carefully and use the available supports during this time.

We look forward to working together as we plan for another strong and successful school year.

Early Bird Pricing for Summer AI Program by MIT/Stanford Alumni

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way we live, learn, and work. This summer, students will have the opportunity to explore that world firsthand through an in person, project based AI program hosted at Leonia High School and run by Inspirit AI, an enrichment program developed and taught by Stanford and MIT alumni.

Open to students entering grades 6 through 12, the program introduces the core concepts behind artificial intelligence and how tools like ChatGPT and other generative AI systems are built. Students will learn to program AI using Python, examine topics such as ethics and bias, and collaborate on a hands on project applying AI to areas such as sustainability, healthcare, disaster relief, music, or the arts. No prior computer science experience is required, and advanced cohorts will be available. Separate sections will be offered for middle and high school students.

The program includes 30 hours of instruction and mentorship from Stanford, MIT, and Ivy League graduate students and industry professionals who will travel to Leonia to lead the experience.

An early bird discount is now available. Students who apply by March 31 will receive 25 percent off the $1,600 program fee.

Families interested in learning more are encouraged to review the program brochure and complete the interest form using the links provided. All questions regarding registration, curriculum, logistics, or payment should be directed to Inspirit AI.

LAHCA Cohort 11 Explores Hospitality in the Heart of NYC

LAHCA Cohort 11 recently visited the flagship W Hotel in Union Square, currently ranked the number two hotel in the continental United States, to learn more about careers in the hospitality industry. Students gained insight into the wide range of opportunities available in hotels, from guest services and operations to marketing and management.

The group also explored the Union Square Greenmarket to better understand the farm to table concept. Students saw how local sourcing supports both restaurants and communities, and how fresh, seasonal ingredients play a role in menu planning and guest experience.

It was a valuable, real world learning experience that brought classroom lessons to life.

A reminder for families: all students are required to use their district-issued Chromebooks while in school. Students should bring their Chromebooks to school every day, fully charged and ready for use. Please note that personal laptops or MacBooks may not be used during the school day.

If a student forgets their Chromebook at home, they will not be issued a loaner. Loaner devices are reserved only for students whose district-issued Chromebook is undergoing repair.

Additionally, to help maintain a focused learning environment:
  • Cell phones, AirPods, and headphones may not be used during instructional time.
  • Meta glasses and other smart glasses are not permitted at any time.

Stock Market Game Update: Rankings and Real-World Skills

The Northern Region High School Division now includes 444 teams, with 1,813 teams competing statewide in The Stock Market Game. As of March 6, Leonia continues to hold strong positions among a very competitive field.
Our top three teams are:

  • Samar Sharma & Noah Caba – Region: 10/444 | State: 48/1813
  • Husain Abbas & Peter Barbara – Region: 11/444 | State: 49/1813
  • Allen Mirek – Region: 34/444 | State: 146/1813

This week, students wrapped up the Investing Unit with a focus on short selling and short covering. Teams have the option to experiment with short selling in the simulation, and it will be interesting to see how many decide to test that strategy in the coming weeks.

Student reflections show a growing depth of understanding. One student explained that penny stocks are typically shares of companies with market capitalizations under $300 million or trading below $5 per share. While they may seem attractive to investors with limited funds, they carry significant risk. Even small price changes can dramatically impact equity, especially when holding a large number of shares. Students also noted that many penny stocks trade on over-the-counter markets and require a strong understanding of market behavior before investing.

Looking ahead, classes will begin using Google Sheets to create tables and visual graphics. These tools will support students as they prepare their final Stock Market Game presentations in mid-April. In addition, with Tax Day approaching, students will explore tax brackets and practice calculating federal income taxes, connecting classroom learning to real-world financial responsibilities.

From Lab to Classroom: Regeneron Scientist Visits STEM Academy

Through the Scientists to Classrooms program, Regeneron scientists partner with schools to serve as STEM role models, sharing their career journeys, research experiences, and diverse perspectives with students.

On February 27, Dr. Jason Simon, a pharmacologist with more than 30 years of experience in academic and industrial biomedical research, visited the freshman class of the STEM Academy at Leonia High School. Dr. Simon holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and brings extensive expertise in genomics and genetics related to both monogenic and complex diseases. His work spans multiple therapeutic areas, including oncology, immunology, cardiovascular disease, and neurology.

During his visit, Dr. Simon shared his personal and professional journey, beginning with his school years and continuing through the various stages of his career. He offered students a clear look at the drug discovery process within the pharmaceutical industry, helping them understand how scientific research translates into real-world treatments.

Students were engaged throughout the presentation and asked thoughtful questions during the discussion that followed. Feedback reflected how meaningful it was to connect with a working scientist and see firsthand the value of the science concepts they are studying in class.
The visit was organized by LHS science teacher Dr. Tharian, who also facilitated the conversation and helped guide the discussion.
