As we head into another busy week at LHS, I want to highlight a couple of important ways to stay involved and support our school community.
Our next Home and School Association meeting is Monday night. I encourage all families to attend. The HSA plays an important role in supporting our students and staff, and your voice and participation truly matter.
I also want to ask for your support for our students competing in this year’s Canstruction event. They are collecting canned goods, and every donation makes a difference. Please consider sending in a can or two to help both our team and local families in need.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of Leonia High School. Enjoy this weeks edition of the Roar Report.
GO LIONS!

A team of Leonia Science students is competing in the 2026 Canstruction competition, sponsored by the Bergen County Department of Food Insecurity. We are collecting canned goods for the event, especially soup, spaghetti sauce (large 29 oz and small 15 oz) , and canned fruits and vegetables. Please support the Leonia team by dropping off a can or two in the main office or room 218, and all food collected will be donated to local food banks to help feed those in our community who are not food secure.

The 2026–2027 Program of Studies is now live on the LHS website and can be found under the Student Life tab. With its release, we have officially begun planning for the upcoming school year.
Teachers are currently working on course recommendations for next year. Beginning in early March, Mr. Kalender and members of the school counseling team will meet with students during grade-level meetings to review options and support the course selection process.
As part of this planning cycle, Leonia High School will host our annual 8th Grade Scheduling Night on February 19, 2026 at 6:00 PM in the Little Theater. This event is an important opportunity for students and families to learn more about our academic offerings and the transition to high school.
Students will be able to enter their course requests in the Genesis Student Portal beginning on March 13 at 9:00 AM. The course request window will close on March 23 at 12:00 PM, so we encourage students to review the Program of Studies carefully and use the available supports during this time.
We look forward to working together as we plan for another strong and successful school year.

Artificial intelligence is shaping nearly every part of our daily lives. From voice assistants and facial recognition to self driving cars and tools like ChatGPT, AI continues to influence how we learn, work, and solve problems. The opportunities for students to explore this technology in thoughtful and responsible ways are growing quickly.
This summer, an in person, project based Artificial Intelligence program will be hosted at Leonia High School through Inspirit AI, an enrichment program developed and taught by Stanford and MIT alumni. While the program will take place at LHS, it is run entirely by Inspirit AI and is not a Leonia High School program.
Students entering grades 6 through 12 will explore the foundational concepts behind AI and gain insight into how technologies such as ChatGPT are built. Participants will learn to program AI using Python, examine important topics such as ethics and bias, and complete a collaborative group project. Project themes may include sustainability, disaster relief, healthcare, music, the arts, and more. No prior computer science experience is required, and advanced cohorts will be available. Separate sections will be offered for middle and high school students.
The program includes 30 hours of hands on learning with AI practitioners and graduate students from Stanford and MIT who will travel to Leonia to teach. The cost of the program is $1,600.
If your child may be interested, please complete the short interest form linked below and review the program brochure for additional details about the curriculum, schedule, projects, and instructional team. All questions regarding registration, curriculum, logistics, or payment should be directed to Inspirit AI. Their contact information can be found in the link provided.

This past Friday evening, the Little Theater was filled with energy and excitement as the Korean Culture Club hosted its Lunar New Year celebration from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Students took part in three interactive events and were divided into two teams, adding a fun element of friendly competition to the night. Prizes were awarded to participants, and plenty of smiles and laughter followed.
It was a great opportunity for students to come together, celebrate culture, and enjoy time with friends. The club is now looking ahead and preparing to assist with the upcoming Korean Culture Festival on Friday, February 27th. We look forward to another fantastic event.

Congratulations to David Kim, Kayla Park, and Kaylin Park on their outstanding performance with the Region 1 High School Orchestra this past weekend.
In just a few short rehearsals, they prepared and performed a demanding program alongside some of the top student musicians in the region. Their hard work, focus, and musicianship were on full display, and they represented our school with pride and professionalism.
We are incredibly proud of their accomplishment and the dedication they bring to our music program.

A reminder for families: all students are required to use their district-issued Chromebooks while in school. Students should bring their Chromebooks to school every day, fully charged and ready for use. Please note that personal laptops or MacBooks may not be used during the school day.
If a student forgets their Chromebook at home, they will not be issued a loaner. Loaner devices are reserved only for students whose district-issued Chromebook is undergoing repair.
Additionally, to help maintain a focused learning environment:
- Cell phones, AirPods, and headphones may not be used during instructional time.
- Meta glasses and other smart glasses are not permitted at any time.
Thank you for partnering with us to ensure students are prepared and focused during the school day.

Super Bowl season is one of the biggest retail moments of the year, and to bring that real-world marketing challenge into the classroom, Sports Career Consulting hosted our Super Bowl LX Point-of-Purchase Display Competition. Students were asked to design an in-store display for a consumer brand tied to the Big Game and pair it with a promotion built to drive sales.
Leonia High School Students Celeste Garzon, Angelica Do and Daniella Cameron won Third Place: Coca-Cola “Refresh and Win Big”
This third-place entry earned its spot by delivering one of the most realistic, store-friendly promotions in the competition. The Coca-Cola display concept was clear, easy to execute, and built around how people actually shop leading up to the Super Bowl: stocking up on multipacks for watch parties and game-day gatherings.
What made this submission stand out was the promotion itself. The students paired the display with a simple “buy more, get rewarded” offer that encourages customers to purchase multiple Coca-Cola packs, unlocking instant savings and a sweepstakes-style entry via a QR code. It was practical, easy for a retailer to run, and directly tied to the goal of point-of-purchase marketing: increasing sales during Super Bowl week.

Our MBLA Introduction to Finance students are off to a strong start in this year’s Stock Market Game. The Northern Region – H.S. Division currently includes 326 participating teams, with 1,497 teams competing across the state. The level of competition is impressive, and our students are right in the mix.
As of February 20, the top three Leonia teams are:
-
Samar Sharma & Noah Caba – Region: 2/326 | State: 12/1497
-
Allen Mirek – Region: 4/326 | State: 16/1497
-
Peter Barbara & Husain Abbas – Region: 18/326 | State: 62/1497
These rankings reflect the time, strategy, and thoughtful decision making our students are putting into their portfolios.
Learning Beyond the Leaderboard
In class this week, students focused on how to read and interpret a stock quote using Yahoo Finance. They also explored different types of bonds and discussed the relationship between risk and return, an essential concept for any investor.
Through their weekly reports, students are required to research a game related topic, helping them connect classroom lessons to real world market activity. Based on what they are sharing in those reports, they are gaining meaningful insight into how investing works, how to evaluate opportunities, and how to think critically about financial decisions.
It is exciting to see our students not only competing at a high level, but also building practical skills that will serve them well far beyond this game.

Students in Biology recently brought their learning to life during a hands on DNA extraction lab. Using simple household ingredients like soap and salt, they created an extraction buffer and successfully pulled DNA from bananas right in the classroom.
As they broke down the cell wall and nucleus, students were able to watch translucent strands of DNA form and precipitate before their eyes. It was an exciting moment that turned an abstract concept into something visible and tangible. Experiences like this give students a deeper understanding of the science behind the structure of life and remind us how powerful hands on learning can be.

Our LAHCA Cohort 13 students put their culinary skills to work this week, practicing proper knife techniques while preparing homemade vegetable soup. It was great to see students building confidence in the kitchen while focusing on safety and precision.
In Regional American Foods, students explored a taste of Maine by making whoopie pies, the state’s official dessert. From carefully measuring ingredients to assembling the classic cake-like cookies with their sweet filling, students gained hands-on experience while enjoying a delicious final product.
