The seasons are finally starting to turn, and it’s beginning to feel like fall! Hard to believe we’re only two and a half weeks away from the end of the first marking period.
Our classrooms have been alive with great lessons, students are engaged, asking questions, and full of energy. Be sure to check out the “Lions Caught Learning” section to see some of the amazing things happening around the school.
A reminder that we are off this coming Monday, October 20th, in observance of Diwali. To our families celebrating, we wish you a joyful and bright holiday!
This weekend, please come out to support our Boys Soccer team and our Cross Country teams as they compete in the Bergen County Tournaments. Let’s cheer on our Lions as they continue their strong seasons!
GO LIONS!

The Student Services Department invites you to attend our annual Financial Aid Night on Thursday, October 23 at 6:00 PM in the Little Theater at Leonia High School.
This presentation will cover the college financial aid process, including a detailed overview of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and helpful strategies for finding additional funding opportunities. While the information will be especially useful for parents of seniors, we encourage families of all grade levels to attend and start learning about the process early.
Our guest speaker for the evening is a representative from the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) and a member of the Montclair State University Financial Aid Office. You can also visit www.hesaa.org for the most up-to-date financial aid information.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s counselor.

The Leonia High School Debate Team is off to a great start this year. Competing in the Bergen County Debate League, juniors Olivia Gwak and Christopher Lau earned an impressive 3rd place finish out of 12 teams, scoring 89 points to kick off the 2025–2026 season. The duo will represent LHS again on Thursday, October 23rd, at North Bergen High School.
At the first JV math of the season all four of our teams went 1–1 in their matches, showing strong potential for the season ahead. A special shoutout goes to senior Kristyn Lee, who was recognized as one of the top three judges of the night and received a pin for the honor. Congratulations to the entire Debate Team on an outstanding start!

The Leonia Lions boys soccer team earned a spot in the Bergen County Tournament as the 24th and final seed, and they’ve been proving that seeding doesn’t tell the whole story. Last Saturday, the Lions upset #9 seed Ramsey High School with a 3-1 victory. Their momentum continued against #8 seed Glen Rock High School, where a 1-1 draw after regulation led to a penalty kick shootout. Thanks to a clutch stop by goalie Milo Skibola during the penalty kicks, the Lions secured the win and advanced to the quarterfinals. Milo Skibola has been a standout in goal, totaling 14 saves in the first two games and making key plays when it mattered most.
This Saturday, October 18th, at 4:30 PM, the Lions will face the #1 seeded Bergen Catholic Crusaders at Ramapo High School. Come out and cheer on the team as they aim to continue their impressive run!

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) is requiring all districts to participate in a mandatory NJSLA-Adaptive field test this fall. This test is essential to help the state develop the new computer-adaptive assessment, which will personalize the testing experience for students in the future. This is a field test only, which means students will not receive individual scores or results. The sole purpose is for the NJDOE to evaluate the quality and fairness of the test items before the NJSLA-A begins in Spring 2026.
LHS Field Testing Dates:
October 28th - NJSLA Mathematics (Grades 9-12)
October 29th - NJSLA ELA (Grades 9 & 10)
October 29th - NJGPA ELA (Grade 11)
The NJDOE has released tutorials and practice tests on the New Jersey Assessments Portal's Student and Families Webpage. The tutorials familiarize students with the items types, testing tools, accessibility features, test format, and navigation of the Test Delivery System (TDS) that will be used for the NJSLA-A and NJGPA-A. Practice tests provide an opportunity for students to become familiar with the types of items and to respond to test questions similar to the questions students will be asked to answer on each of the tests.

Students are welcome to wear costumes to school on Friday, October 31st, to celebrate Halloween. As you plan your costume, please keep the following expectations in mind:
- The regular school dress code remains in effect.
- Weapons or replicas of weapons are strictly prohibited and will be handled according to the code of conduct if brought to school.
- Costumes must allow students to participate in normal classroom activities (for example, students must be able to sit at a desk and move safely through hallways).
- For safety reasons, masks or face paint that make a student unrecognizable are not allowed.
- Costumes must be school-appropriate and in good taste—avoid anything offensive, suggestive, or disrespectful.
- The administration reserves the right to determine whether a costume is appropriate for school.
If you’re unsure whether your costume meets these guidelines, it’s best to check with the Principal or Vice Principal before wearing it.
Please remember that teaching and learning take priority throughout the day. Students who arrive in inappropriate attire will be addressed according to the school’s code of conduct.

A reminder for families: all students are required to use their district-issued Chromebooks while in school. Students should bring their Chromebooks to school every day, fully charged and ready for use. Please note that personal laptops or MacBooks may not be used during the school day.
If a student forgets their Chromebook at home, they will not be issued a loaner. Loaner devices are reserved only for students whose district-issued Chromebook is undergoing repair.
Additionally, to help maintain a focused learning environment:
- Cell phones, AirPods, and headphones may not be used during instructional time.
- Meta glasses and other smart glasses are not permitted at any time.
Thank you for partnering with us to ensure students are prepared and focused during the school day.

Mr. Holak’s orchestra class is hard at work preparing Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 for the Winter Concert. After focused sectional rehearsals this afternoon, the students have successfully learned all the notes and can now play through about half of the piece. Excitement is building as they continue to refine their performance in the weeks ahead!

In World Cuisine, students are making Brazilian Coxinha. This is a popular Brazilian snack made of shredded chicken wrapped in savory dough, shaped like a little drumstick, and usually fried until golden. Right now, the students are on the second step—preparing the stuffed dough—and are excited to bring these delicious treats to life.

Ms. Kelty’s AP European History students recently took a creative approach to learning about the 16th century with a “Reformation Speed Dating” activity. Students stepped into the shoes of major historical figures—Martin Luther, John Calvin, Pope Leo X, and iconic English royals like Mary I and Elizabeth I—and rotated through quick “dates” to debate, discuss, and persuade each other on theological and political matters.
The activity brought the complex alliances, conflicts, and ideas of the Reformation era to life, giving students a hands-on, fast-paced way to understand this pivotal period in European history. By combining role-play with critical thinking, students explored history not just as events in a textbook, but as lively debates that shaped the world.
