Message from the Principal

This week at Leonia High School, we focused on the theme of Respect as part of our Week of Respect activities. It was wonderful to see students and staff participating in spirit days and events, all coming together to support our efforts to prevent bullying and foster a culture of respect and kindness throughout our school community.

This weekend is a big one for Leonia Athletics, with many of our teams competing in County tournaments. Be sure to check out the information below to see where our Lions are in action and show your support!

Looking ahead, on Wednesday, October 15th, LHS will administer the PSAT/NMSQT to all sophomores and juniors. A special schedule will be in place for the day, and details including the Edgewater Bus Schedule are provided below.

Thank you for helping make LHS a place where respect, kindness, and school spirit are always on display.

On Tuesday, October 15th, all sophomores and juniors at LHS will take the PSAT/NMSQT in a digital format. This exam is an important opportunity for students to practice for the SAT and to gain feedback on their academic skills. For juniors, the PSAT/NMSQT also serves as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which recognizes top academic performers nationwide.

  • Sophomores and Juniors – Report to school at their regular time for testing.
  • Freshmen and Seniors – Report to school at 11:25 AM.

The special schedule for the day, as well as the Edgewater bus schedule, is provided below for your reference.

About the PSAT/NMSQT

Leonia Mayor's Youth Advisory Committee

Leonia Mayor, Mr. Bill Ziegler, has reached out to the Leonia Board of Education for help in selecting members for the Mayor's Youth Advisory Committee in order to gain valuable insights into the concerns and priorities of high school students, particularly as they relate to key municipal services such as the Police Department, Recreation Commission, Library, Environmental Commission, Share Tree Commission, and diversity related matters. The Mayor believes the perspectives of our youth can help to better serve the community.

The mayor is looking for interested Leonia students in grades 10 and 11.

Students selected are expected to attend all meetings, complete any preparatory work, and actively contribute. Students missing more than two meetings will be replaced by alternates.

Meetings will take place monthly.

Selection Process:
The Mayor has asked the Leonia High School staff and administration to recommend potential candidates for the committee. The Mayor will then meet individually with the recommended candidates to explain the initiative and select the final members.

In order to recommend students that are passionate and interested in this opportunity we are asking Leonia students in the Junior and Sophomore classes to complete this Google Form. Students will need to complete all attached information and write a short 250 word statement explaining why they would like to be considered for the Mayor's Youth Advisory Committee.

****Must be using your Leonia student email to access the Google Form. Parents will not be able to access the Google Form.

All submissions are due by Monday, October 13, 2025 at 3:00pm.

If you have any questions, see Mr. Kalender.

As required by the NJDOE, our annual Parent Notification of Assessments document is now available on the district website. This document shares our state and local assessment dates for the 2025-2026 school year, and includes the grade levels testing, time allotments, and resources for families.

NJDOE Announces Fall Field Test Requirement for NJSLA-A

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) is requiring all districts to participate in a mandatory NJSLA-Adaptive field test this fall. This test is essential to help the state develop the new computer-adaptive assessment, which will personalize the testing experience for students in the future. This is a field test only, which means students will not receive individual scores or results. The sole purpose is for the NJDOE to evaluate the quality and fairness of the test items before the NJSLA-A begins in Spring 2026.

LHS Field Testing Dates:
October 28th - NJSLA Mathematics (Grades 9-12)
October 29th - NJSLA ELA (Grades 9 & 10)
October 29th - NJGPA ELA (Grade 11)

The NJDOE has released tutorials and practice tests on the New Jersey Assessments Portal's Student and Families Webpage. The tutorials familiarize students with the items types, testing tools, accessibility features, test format, and navigation of the Test Delivery System (TDS) that will be used for the NJSLA-A and NJGPA-A. Practice tests provide an opportunity for students to become familiar with the types of items and to respond to test questions similar to the questions students will be asked to answer on each of the tests.

Halloween at LHS: Costume Guidelines for Students

Students are welcome to wear costumes to school on Friday, October 31st, to celebrate Halloween. As you plan your costume, please keep the following expectations in mind:

  • The regular school dress code remains in effect.
  • Weapons or replicas of weapons are strictly prohibited and will be handled according to the code of conduct if brought to school.
  • Costumes must allow students to participate in normal classroom activities (for example, students must be able to sit at a desk and move safely through hallways).
  • For safety reasons, masks or face paint that make a student unrecognizable are not allowed.
  • Costumes must be school-appropriate and in good taste—avoid anything offensive, suggestive, or disrespectful.
  • The administration reserves the right to determine whether a costume is appropriate for school.

If you’re unsure whether your costume meets these guidelines, it’s best to check with the Principal or Vice Principal before wearing it.

Please remember that teaching and learning take priority throughout the day. Students who arrive in inappropriate attire will be addressed according to the school’s code of conduct.

Happy Halloween

If a student forgets their Chromebook at home, they will not be issued a loaner. Loaner devices are reserved only for students whose district-issued Chromebook is undergoing repair.

Additionally, to help maintain a focused learning environment:
  • Cell phones, AirPods, and headphones may not be used during instructional time.
  • Meta glasses and other smart glasses are not permitted at any time.

What Happens If You Give an AP Lang Student a Mystery Text?

Students in AP Language and Composition took on a fun challenge this week—analyzing a mystery text to determine its line of reasoning. After carefully examining and connecting the clues, they discovered the passage was none other than the beloved children’s book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. The activity sparked great discussion about argument structure and how even simple stories can reveal complex reasoning.

Important: Flex Sign-Up Instructions from Mr. Kalender for Students

The message below was sent to students earlier this week with information on signng up for FLEX Activities.

Good Afternoon LHS Students,

This is a reminder that you must sign up for your Flex Activities for each day we have Flex. Flex takes place every day except on half-days, delayed openings, or special schedule days.
You can sign up in one of two ways:

  1. Through Flex Time Manager in ClassLink
  2. By downloading the Securly Flex App from your app store

Sign-ups are due by 9:00 AM two school days days before the Flex day. For example, you must sign up by Thursday at 9:00 AM for Flex activities on Monday, October 13th. (The weekends are not counted)

If you have specific activities you want to attend, it’s highly recommended that you sign up several days in advance to make sure you get a seat in your preferred session.

If you do not sign up by the deadline, the system will temporarily place you in Catchall–Cafeteria. At midnight before the Flex day, the auto-scheduler will assign you to a Flex activity.

It’s your responsibility to check your Flex schedule each morning to confirm where you’re supposed to be. Students who do not attend the activity listed on their schedule will receive a cut for that period.

Please note: If a staff member assigns you to an activity, you cannot override that assignment. You are required to attend the activity the staff member scheduled for you.

Make sure you’re signing up on time and attending the correct activity. This helps keep Flex running smoothly for everyone.

Thank you,
Chuck Kalender
Principal, Leonia High School
